Description

Sloths are so named because of their very low metabolism and deliberate movements. They spend 15 to 20 hours per day sleeping. They are built for life in trees, where their long curved claws are used for gripping branches. All sloth species have long legs, rounded heads and small ears. They eat both plants and small animals. They learn what foods to eat by licking their mother’s lips – this teaches the baby to know what foods are safe to eat.  Sloths are arboreal creatures, which means they live the vast majority of their lives up in the treetops. All species of sloths are found in rainforests of Central and South America. There are different species found in Honduras to Eastern Peru and from Guyana to north of the Amazon River in Brazil. Also on the Isla Escudo de Veraguas off the coast of Panama.
