Description
Chimpanzees have long arms and their bodies have coarse black hair covering all but their face, palms and the soles of their feet. They can be between 3.2 and 5.5 feet tall. Males weigh more than females at around 80-140 lbs and females can weight between 60 and 110 lbs. The different subspecies prefer different habitat types. Some will inhabit tropical rainforests or scrub forests and others live on savannahs, grasslands and in woodlands. Many also live in mountainous regions up to 9,000 feet. They feed on a wide variety of plants and animals. Each subspecies has different dietary preferences. The season can also impact on their diet as some foods increase in volume during the spring and summer. Their diet includes fruits, berries, nuts, leaves, stems, seeds, bark and many more. Their carnivorous diet contains a variety of insects and invertebrates, eggs and small mammals. Chimpanzees live throughout various regions of eastern and central Africa.
