Chickens are one of the most common and widespread domestic animals, there was a population of 23.7 billion as of 2018. There are more chickens than any other bird. They are omnivores and in the wild often scratch at the soil for seeds and insects. Hens will often try to lay in nests that already contain eggs and have been known to move eggs from other nests into their own. Most chickens are raised in captivity. Their habitat often consists of a factory farm setting. In the wild they have two primary habitats, their feeding areas usually consist of open canopies and underlying shrubs while roosting sites are typically found in lower tree branches and are used at night. In captivity they require the same dual-habitat area. Frequently, this includes a chicken coop and a fenced-in outdoor area. A chick Is a bird that has not yet reached adulthood.
