Description
The Orca is the largest of the toothed whales, and possibly the most famous. Also called killer whales, they are incredibly intelligent predators and hunt a variety of prey species. They use a variety of sounds to communicate and hunt together. They are one of the most recognizable marine mammals, due to their black and white pattern and their large size. They frequently inhabit coastal and offshore seas, particularly areas where cold-water from the ocean depths rises. This happens in areas where deep-sea currents push cold, nutrient-rich waters to the surface. The Orca feeds on a variety of fish including salmon, herring, sharks and stingrays. They also eat penguins, seals and even whales. Orcas can be found in oceans worldwide, though they are found in greater numbers in the Arctic and Antarctic.
