Description
Crocodiles are large reptiles with thick scales, long snouts and lots of sharp teeth! Adults can measure up to 20 feet long and weigh in excess of 2,000 pounds. They are carnivorous creatures that only eat meat. They spend most of their time in the water but often lie on the bank to sun themselves. Some live in saltwater and others in freshwater. Their diets depend on where they live and how large they are. Hatchlings and young crocodiles feed on insects, small fish, shrimp and frogs. Adults feed on turtles, monkeys, snakes and large fish. They hide beneath the water with only their nostrils and eyes showing and when prey approaches they lunge forward and grab them. They are semiaquatic and live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.
